# Versioning

The API is `v1`, under `/public/v1/`. Within v1, changes are additive only:

* a new route, a new optional parameter, a new response field, or a new error code;
* never a removed or renamed field, a changed type, or a changed meaning.

Write clients that ignore fields they do not know, and that handle an unknown error code by its HTTP
status.

A breaking change ships as a new version. The old version keeps working for at least 90 days after the
new one is announced in the [changelog](/changelog).

The reference (`openapi.json`) is generated from the code, and the build fails when the two disagree.
